About Stephen J. Cullen:
Stephen studied printmaking and painting for three years at University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, during the early 1970's. He received his BA degree in fine art and architectural history from Arizona State University in 1983. Beginning in 1984 he worked as a landscape architect in Tempe, Arizona operating Stephen J. Cullen and Associates. In 1994 he returned to working full time in fine art printmaking and painting.
Stephen has exhibited his work nationally in numerous competitive and invitational shows. He has exhibited his work in galleries in Sedona, Arizona and Aspen, Colorado. Before moving to Charlotte in 2007 Stephen was an active member of The American Watercolor Society, Arizona Artist Guild (Juried Member), Arizona Art Alliance, Arizona Watercolor Association, Artlink (Phoenix), National Watercolor Society and the Sonoran Arts League.
In the past decades Stephen’s paintings have fed from our expectations of both the natural world and the man made. His imagery is woven together from elements of both the imagined and the real, often centering on environmental themes. His watercolors are populated with wildlife and plants, fish and birds and reflect his love of the wilderness of the desert southwest. Stephen's oil studies and still life's represent a shift in not only media but in style and character. Everyday objects are selected as much for the technical challenge as they are for what they represent.
His most recent project, his dog portrait series, has centered on his interest in the character and worth of dogs. Stephen’s intention is to create a body of work that portrays the nature and personality of dogs in a serious and faithful manner with the same dignity and detail that is so often reserved to the formal portraits of people.
