Artist's statement:

I have always loved art, even as a child I got in trouble at home and school for drawing when - and on what - I wasn't supposed to. Not long after entering a career in advertising around 1981, I began painting in earnest, and quickly developed a regional style at the time which focused on quick location studies of my neighborhood, which at that time was Jacksonville, Florida.

While painting in the late 80's, I also found myself keeping a personal journal which captured the "journey" of this exploration into art. That interest has led to more than 25 written and illustrated journals. More recently I have been using the web as a more communication-friendly means of capturing and sharing these thoughts (See http://www.spfarm.com/wp). I believe that today we must "know" the artist as well as behold their work, in order to arrive at a grasp of the relevance of the art.

Around 1987 I began studying various forms of intaglio, and set up a printmaking studio in southern Georgia, where I worked from 1984-87, focusing on primarily landscapes in traditional etching and drypoint approaches. While painting on location has more recently captured my heart and interest, I hope to return to printmaking soon as a means to further explore the mystery of the land around us.

Over the last few years I have focused on location paintings in the "plein aire" tradition. Paintings which are accomplished in one session, capturing a particular moment of mood in nature (and the artist). This endeavor has led to hundreds of paintings, many of which are currently on exhibit at the online gallery (See http://mparkes.com).

The longing of my heart is to continue to paint the world I see around me. I strive to create a sincere and heartfelt work, (and an affordable one) which I hope expresses just a tiny part of the mystery and majesty that surrounds us... and is within us.
