From: Sally Shisler - Studies & Stories of Daily Painting
Yesterday I asked myself where I'd been. Last night I realized that lately I've been knocking on the doors of every other artist's heart & soul except my own. Studying other artist's paintings is absolutely critical for our own growth. But when you obsess about 'how did they do that?', you can easily get carried away with wishing you had been the one to do that. Like Virginia Vaughn's painting from yesterday - oh my, how I wish I'd done that! And there are so many other artist's paintings that I also wish I had done. Both contemporary and from days long since passed. I know when I'm in my own zone, I can feel a wide open channel that comes mostly from chest and connects to my arm. My head doesn't have anything to do with it. When I'm trying to channel someone else's creative spirit, it's my head that takes over. This is also known as a disaster area! All that being said, today's painting is entirely influenced by Camille Przewodek (California Colorist) and also by the Leningrad school of artists that I mentioned yesterday. I'm happy with the results, but I went through a stretch of time with it where I wanted to give up painting altogether. Like I said - disaster area.
