About Monique Straub

From as far back as I can remember, art has been a part of my life. By age ten I sculpted the hair on my pet poodle into high fashion, designed program covers and flyers for my elementary school events, painted stylistic murals of clouds and countryside on the walls and ceiling of my bedroom, and even my bicycle was "customized." I have always included some form of art in my daily life. With formal training in fine art photography, art history, illustration and painting under my belt, I decided to continue to work freely, unrestricted by the traditional rules and concepts of art making. Primarily painting in soft pastel, and occasionally in oil, acrylic and colored pencil, I enjoy painting daily. My "studio" works are inspired and created using my outdoor sketches and photographs as inspiration. Occasionally I paint on location. Since 2001, I have taken to painting full-time, and actively participate in juried art competitions, art festivals, daily painting groups, and various community art activities. I am a Signature Member of The Pastel Society of America, and currently a member of the San Diego Museum of the Living Artist, The Pastel Society of San Diego, Spanish Village Art Center, and The Daily Painters. My original and commissioned works are in collections and institutions throughout the country. ARTIST STATEMENT: "I enjoy painting the world with my own twist. Rather than producting textbook renditions, I choose to concentrate on emphasizing the individual character of my subject. Blending of traditional materials allows me to give unique personality to everyday scenes. I approach each of these original works as an adventure. The result is as surprising for me as I hope it is for you."
